Blender to VRay - Settings Part 2
cmiVFX launches brand new training for the ever growing popular VRay renderer by the Chaos Group. This video uses Blender as the interface to the VRay renderer, however the content is focusing on the settings of VRay which apply to ALL host applications exactly the same. For the first time ever, a Maya user or Cinema 4D user can watch this video and get the same information related to their application. If you are interested in using VRay, and do not use Blender, this video is STILL FOR YOU. As always, each video sale at cmiVFX.com will allow your to access a shared chat system for each and every video title so any questions you might have, can be answered in the same place that you are learning in real time. About This Video

After you learned how to install and setup V-Ray and the Blender exporter in the first part of the Blender to V-Ray course, you will now have an in-depth look at the render settings and how to optimize them. Understanding the render process with Light cache and Irradiance Map for the global illumination is the key to fast and clean renderings. In almost three and a half hours you will learn everything you need to know to get the best out of V-Ray. Indoor lighting especially can lead to noise in the irradiance map, that’s why we concentrate on that and find ways to improve the Irradiance settings.

Another very typical kind of noise is the grainy noise caused by blurry shadows from area-lights and portals, depth of field, blurry reflections and of course the Brute Force engine, if used for the primary bounces. Understanding the image sampler and how Adaptive DMC works is essential to eliminate noise with just a few clicks.

One big chapter of this tutorial is Color Management and Gamma Correction. V-Ray renders with linear gamma by default, and if you do not compensate for that you will probably have a hard time getting your desired results. You should also be aware of Blender’s own color-management which is enabled by default. This will have an impact on the color-sliders and the compositor. This tutorial will show you how to handle that.

Especially when rendering animations it is important to have fast and flicker free renderings. Fortunately, V-Ray is able to bake and preprocess Light cache and Irradiance Map, which will speed up the render process and avoid flickering.

To round off this in-depth introduction we will also have a look at the various material and texture settings, setup an HDRI lighting and see how we can render with a nice Depth of Field.

The follow-up to this tutorial will then cover a whole project from A to Z, building on the knowledge you gained in this tutorial, whilst covering some more neat tricks like VRay Proxies, Particle Scatter and compositing render elements.
